Today marks the 9th year of the September 11 attacks on Twin Towers of the World Trade Centre in New York City. The attack left the 2 majestic towers in rubble and killed more than 2,000 people.
Back in 1998, I was in Manhattan, New York to attend the now-defunct Internet World. Unfortunately, I didn’t have time to make a trip to the towers back then, and I’ll never be able to. What I did have is a photograph taken from the Empire State Building towards the direction of the towers. This was shot on crappy Kodak Max 400 film and scanned using a Nikon Coolscan III. There was quite a bit of haze on that morning.
In 2005, I had the opportunity to visit Manhattan again for the Search Engine Strategies event. I simply had to take another shot of the same view. This time, instead of fog, I get quite bad backlighting.
2 days later, I visited ground zero. and noticed this cross. According to what I hear from a nearby guide, this was part of the scaffolding of the building and was found, as if by miracle, as it is now, in the shape of a cross. It was then erected as a memorial to the people who have perished in the disaster.
For those people who have died in the attacks, I hope they rest in peace. Let’s hope that such terrorist attacks will not happen anywhere, anytime and let the world be a better place to live in.
